Heights of the Marvelous Summary

There is so much happening in poetry in the United States right now that there is no way that a single anthology can encompass it all. The best one can do as an anthologist is to offer up a snapshot of what one sees as most interesting and hopefully the reader will be enlightened by the choices made.

Here is a collection of poems illuminating the microcosm called New York City. There is no single school or ideology represented. But here you will find inventiveness of form, content, and subject matter. Some of the language sounds like it's from conversations overheard. Other poems offer something like a wild new language or a reinvention of an old one.

Here are poems from Anselm Berrigan, Todd Colby, Brenda Coultas, Jordan Davis, Maggie Estep, Amy Fusselman, Mimi Goese, Kenneth Goldsmith, Mitch Highfill, Ben Marcus, Sharon Mesmer, Amanda Nazario, Maggie Nelson, Michael Portnoy, Lee Ranaldo, Carl Hancock Rux, Prageeta Sharma, Beau Sia, Edwin Torres, Marianne Vitale, and Mac Wellman -- poets proving that poetry is alive and well in New York City.

"This anthology is very good news. The poems of these definitively NYC poets really feel like ultimate edges, and the view from their heights is marvelous indeed. I love the intense diversity of the various poets -- it's as though we humans were being measured for an ultimate suit. Let's hope it fits!"
