Imperialism, Race and Resistance Summary

This book examines the debates surrounding racism, race-relations and citizenship in the inter-war period and their implications for the rest of the 20th century. The author analyses the impact of imperialism on black men and women in Africa.

Focusing on Britain and West and South Africa, Imperialism, Racism and Resistance discusses:
* the growth of anti-colonial resistance and early opposition to racism
* the complex nature of imperial power
* the impact of imperialism on the lives and struggles of black men and women in Africa.
Bush argues that tensions between white dreams of power and black dreams of freedom were seminal in transforming Britain's relationship with Africa in an era bounded by global war and shaped by ideological conflict.

Focusing on Britain and Africa, this looks at the growth of anti-colonial resistance and opposition to racism in the prelude to the post-colonial era. It also makes imporatant new developments in the study of interwar history.
