Into the Fire Summary

Mike is 16 and is begging on the streets of Brighton when a benevolent entrepreneur, William Sutherland, offers him a job and a place to live. What Mike doesn’t know is that Sutherland runs illegal boy-brothels and Mike is destined for a life of drugs and prostitution.

Jack, 23, is Sutherland’s right hand man and controls the operation in England. But Jack is now fearing for his own safety and looking for a way out. When he recruits Mike into the ‘house’ he sees a way for both of them to escape.

Taking incriminating evidence against Sutherland as protection, money intended for a drug deal and the young Mike, Jack flees across Europe in his attempt to escape. Very soon though Jack learns that Mike is not all he seems and he begins to realise that something is wrong. Mike says he has killed and will kill again. He says he sees vampires and has had an illness of the mind. But Jack is falling in love with him.

Things get worse when Jack realises that Sutherland has sent an assassin to kill the two of them and retrieve the evidence. And, when Mike tells him that he has hidden the evidence for ‘safe keeping’ Jack realises that he has leapt from the frying pan and into the fire.

The story is told through Jack and Mike’s diaries, e-mails, reports and letters making this thriller as real as if it were true.

And that’s the problem. One of the story tellers is suffering from schizophrenia and is not telling the truth. But which one is it? Which version of the story is true and who do you believe when you cannot believe yourself?
