Motion Study Summary

Newton had his apple. Darwin had his finches. Mendel had his peas. And Frank Bunker Gilbreth had his bricks—or bricklayers, to be accurate. Gilbreth had in common with the giants of natural science the acute observation of the mundane. In Motion Study, Gilbreth examined all of the factors that contribute to the productivity of the bricklayer in minute detail. In his case, of course, the revolution that followed gave impetus to that strange amalgam of the physical and the psychological sciences: “management” science. Gilbreth’s insights were so fruitful that numerous other progeny followed. Industrial engineering, human resources management, and ergonomics may be all counted among them in one manner or other.
