Penrod and Sam Summary
| During the daylight hours of several autumn Saturdays there had been severe outbreaks of cavalry in the Schofield neighbourhood. The sabres were of wood; the steeds were imaginary, and both were employed in a game called “bonded pris’ner” by its inventors, Masters Penrod Schofield and Samuel Williams. The pastime was not intricate. When two enemies met, they fenced spectacularly until the person of one or the other was touched by the opposing weapon; then, when the ensuing claims of foul play had been disallowed and the subsequent argument settled, the combatant touched was considered to be a prisoner until such time as he might be touched by the hilt of a sword belonging to one of his own party, which effected his release and restored to him the full enjoyment of hostile activity. Pending such rescue, however, he was obliged to accompany the forces of his captor whithersoever their strategical necessities led them, which included many strange places. For the game was exciting, and, at its highest pitch, would sweep out of an alley into a stable, out of that stable and into a yard, out of that yard and into a house, and through that house with the sound (and effect upon furniture) of trampling herds. In fact, this very similarity must have been in the mind of the distressed coloured woman in Mrs. Williams’s kitchen, when she declared that she might “jes’ as well try to cook right spang in the middle o’ the stock-yards.” |

| There is no boredom (not even an invalid's) comparable to that of a boy who has nothing to do...writes the great Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Booth Tarkington in his book "Penrod and Sam." When adults of the parental kind have plans and chores and schedules, an 11-year-old boy's life is dull and unexciting. But when these boys have opportunities for dubious experiments or neighborhood skirmishes with other children or travels of discovery, adults pull back on the reins and check any impulsive advances. And yet Penrod Schofield and Sam Williams are still able to prove their inventiveness and ability to sustain any exploit that may have tantalizing results. Such situations include rescuing an old and hard-worked horse, chasing black snakes, feigning sickness to avoid school, and saving an unsympathetic cat from drowning. Thinking they're going to find out their children's feelings and activities, parents ask politely vague questions and get nonreflective one-syllable answers. Then when grownups ask more direct questions intended for investigation of specific events, young boys mutter and evade as if deaf. Tarkington's talent for describing circumstances from a boy's perspective almost makes this book a manual that defines a youngster's responses to his confusing and bewildering existence. |

| PENROD SCHOFIELD, having been "kept-in" for the unjust period of twenty minutes after school, emerged to a deserted street. That is, the street was deserted so far as Penrod was concerned. Here and there people were to be seen upon the sidewalks, but they were adults, and they and the shade trees had about the same quality of significance in Penrod's consciousness. |
