| The story delves into the circumstances and nature of the central character of Max Thompson and what motivates him. It is his growing discontent as an aging, lonely widower and long-time professor of philosophy 101 that ultimately drives him on a quest for what he considers the impossible -- either "sex or the meaning of life…whichever comes first." That quest begins with a mysterious but easily dismissed attraction to a small town, named Temple Rock, in the mountains and backwoods of northern California; but he is not the only one so drawn to that location. The story is billed as "science fiction fantasy" because, besides the aspect of science fiction, such as interplanetary war, it goes beyond a purist view of science fiction into what would be considered the supernatural or even magical. As it begins, however, with the subject matter handled lightly or even humorously, the fantasy aspect could be read as a spoof of several traditional myths and/or religious concepts, including, if not especially, the jumbling of such various traditions by those of a "New Age" mindset ever so typical, if not expected, of certain people living in the state of California. That aspect is set up immediately following the first two chapters introducing Max. Following chapters introduce a character named Mitzi Morgan, whose fading career as a stand-up comic leads her to the creation of an act she and her associates deem to be "show business as usual," billing her as the latest and greatest of "trance channelers." Her new career is a great success, but becomes so as a result of an actual reality to what she thinks she is only pretending to do, and despite the fact that she and her associates continue to deny it is anything but an act. Mitzi and company are also drawn mysteriously to Temple Rock. The main conflict, described in the title of Part One, "The Second American Revolution," is precipitated by a tragic event involving Max's sister, also living in Temple Rock, the DEA, and a botched attempt at property confiscation. The town takes it quite seriously and turns to Max as their leader in a "Cause" not too well defined in the minds of the townspeople until the end of Part One and the actual beginning of a Revolution. "The War on Terror" and other events, such as federal agents acting on their own as provocateurs result in martial law and the suspension of elections and the Constitution itself. Adam Wagner, a thirteen-year-old computer genius and hacker, is introduced in Part One, but becomes the central character throughout the rest of the story. Max, who had a quite mystic reason to believe he would be reborn as the first child of Adam, reappears as the son of Adam in Part Two, retaining the same first name. Due to a miscalculation in timing on his part, however, he also has an older sister named Maxine. Adam begins his adventure as the leader of a high-tech underground, the most effective part of the Revolution. Another significant character is an artificial intelligence named Matilda, a computer and disembodied but ever-present voice, created by Adam, and virtually part of the family. She eventually becomes an android by training the children, Max and Maxine, in the art and science of robotics. She is also the source of considerable comedy relief, but still a major player. Ultimately she commands an army of formidable but erotically sensitive female androids…having been programmed by the thirteen-year-old Max. Part Three is an even grander revolution on a galactic scale, led by Adam, Max and Maxine, with a lot of help from Matilda. |
