| Description A frank, powerful and thought provoking book that pulls no punches. The author's experiences of mental health services are terrible, from violent staff and patients to forced treatments and the horrific side affects of psychiatric drugs. He moves on to discuss the reasons that he feels he became mentally ill, and how his parents blamed him for sexual abuse that occurred from a young age inside a psychiatric hospital. The overarching theme of this book is the lack of human rights that those in the mental health system have, sufferers are not treated like human beings, it is considered that they are unable to make decisions for himself. Philpot believes the media are partly to blame for this situation, negatively influencing the public with sensationalism and stereotyping. With this book Wesley Philpot is not seeking your pity, nor compensation for his bad treatment, just to have his voice heard. About the Author Wesley James Philpot was born in April 1968 in Hackney, East London. At a young age Wesley became ill and spent much of his teenage years in and out of institutions. More recently Wesley has been studying for a degree in IT but his continuing mental illness has made learning new skills incredibly difficult. He is now a full time carer, caring for his disabled wife and lives in Poole, Dorset. In September 2004 Wesley suffered from a heart attack, he is now recovering well but finds that his forever fragile mind makes recovery a lot more demanding. |
