The UHMWPE Handbook: Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene in Total Joint Replacement Summary

Artificial hip, shoulder and other joint replacements are routine surgical procedures today, and are growing exponentially with an ageing population. The material used for these prosthetic joints is overwhelmingly comprised in part (normally as the socket in which a metal ball joint sits) of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene or UHMWPE. Looking and feeling a lot like the Teflon substance used for artificial skating rinks, this substance has remarkable properties - which explain its useage - but is barely understood to any depth in practice by either surgeons, biomaterials specialists, polymer scientists and engineers. Recently, the orthopedic industry developed new processing techniques (radiation crosslinking), which are expected to dramatically reduce wear and improve the longevity of hip implants beyond 10 years, making this material of still greater importance to the materials and medical communities.
