Reading, writing, and white-water rafting are the three things Anitra Lynn McLeod enjoys the most. When she's not writing, she also enjoys cooking, creating stained glass crafts, cross-stitching and origami.

Interview with Anitra Lynn McLeod

When you were little, did you want to be a writer when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher, then a model, then a nurse, then a fire-fighter…I think I wanted to be everything that I read about and therefore becoming a writer allowed me to be all those things and more!

If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?

Everyone! Honestly, that’s my answer. At one time or another I’ve wanted to be just about every character I’ve read about.

Name a book that you'd be embarrassed to be seen reading.

None. All books have value and meaning. I’m proud to be seen reading whatever I happen to be interested in at that moment. I read everything from cereal boxes to biographies, from cheap dime store novels to the great literary works of Shakespeare. It all gives me information, entertainment, fulfillment—it all matters.

What is a typical writing day like for you? Do you have a work set schedule? What are your surroundings?

I get up, make coffee, read over what I wrote the day before, tweak my work a bit, then start in. I work until I get hungry or fidgety or both. After I eat and/or putter around I write until the hungry or fidgety thing happens again. Then it’s pretty much lather, rinse, repeat all day. I like to write at least five thousand words a day. I have a large office with a desktop computer and lots of books, plants, and an aquarium. My office is very comfortable and homey.

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your writing career?

Having faith in myself. This is what I love to do and it’s what I’m going to keep doing.

Do you believe it is important for authors to have a strong online presence?

Nope. I think this works for some people, but it didn’t work for me. There are some people who insist that you have to be accessible 24/7 to your readers but if I was I wouldn’t get anything done. Most fans who really like my work understand that to continue with the output I have I simply can’t do Facebook, Twitter, and all the other social media. I tried and it was a mess. Now, I post on my blog when I have something to say. Everyone’s happy. :)

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

Ooo, I already have the ability to make it rain by washing my car, but I’ve learned everyone has this particular power so I’d really like to have the ability to cheer people up with a thought. Seriously. I don’t drive or shop often but when I do I see so many people who are so sad and miserable. I’d like to be able to make them giggle just by sending a thought their way. I think the world would be a much nicer place if people simply smiled more.
