Interview with David S. Luton

Is your book Spanish Made High School Simple more suited for the Spanish spoken in Spain or Latin America?

I would say that it’s equally appropriate for both as I give alternate vocabulary or explanations where differences exist. I’m fairly knowledgeable concerning Spanish both as it’s spoken in Spain as well as in Latin America, as I’ve lived in Spain for the last four years, but did my studies abroad in Mexico. I also taught Latin American Spanish for several years as a high school teacher in the the U.S.

What book were you forced to read at school that no child should have to study?

Ha ha. The Grapes of Wrath. It’s a wonderful book in all fairness; it just wasn’t what I wanted to read as a 12 year old!
If you met an alien from another planet and were asked to recommend one or two books to him/her/it that would summarize humanity, which books would you choose?

Anything by Dr. Seuss!

What do you feel is the most important thing to keep in mind while learning a foreign language?

You have to be persistent, but flexible. Also, each person has his or her own learning style; so do what works best for you. I also recommend multiple exposure to the target language including reading authentic materials, watching tv programs and films and listening to music in that language.

Did you ever read a book and then wish you had all that time back?

No, because if the book is good, it’s worth the time, and if it isn’t, I likely won’t finish it.

What is the best contemporary novel you've read in the last year?

Holes by Louis Sachar. I have to admit that I don’t read as many novels these days, but I stumbled across this one and rather enjoyed it.

What was the book that most influenced your life and why?

Albert Camus’s The Stranger, probably because all humans including myself have to come to terms with the fact that we are mortal, just like this book’s main character had to come to terms with his imminent execution.

If you had a book club, what would it be reading and why?

I suppose that some book clubs read only certain categories of books, but personally, I would like to let people read whatever they like. I think the challenge would be to explain what you’re reading to the others in the club so as to interest them in something that they were possibly never interested in before.

What do you think of eBooks? Do you support digital publishing?

I think eBooks are awesome and I wholly support digital publishing. There are still a lot of people interested in traditional books. Even so, eBooks open new doors of opportunities for both reading and publishing. In the end, people like to have the right to choose what they like or want to do. With eBooks, people finally have a real choice, and many are choosing it.

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

I would love to be able to fly. I’ve had my fill of traffic jams and crowded or noisy buses, subways or commuter trains!
