I am a medical doctor by profession. Born in south east Nigeria, I am currently practicing in the capital city of Abuja in Nigeria. My favorite authors are Robin Cook and John Grisham. I also read Scarpetta novels. I love crime thrillers and drama. I have unpublished fictional works, one of them titled 'Exceptional and Invincible'. I also write medical essays and articles, which include one currently in the New England Journal of Medicine. I desire to be a medical doctor with a knack for writing.

Each week authors will be given a new question to answer which will lend additional insight into their story and writing process. Do you have a question you'd like to see the authors answer? Tweet it to @aNextAuthor!

What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
'Never give up writing'. My high school teacher tells me that each time I feel like dropping my pen. She is my mentor and had a huge impact in developing my writing skills when I was in school.
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
Often,I have an outline in my head. But the ideas flow like adrenaline rush at times and I find it difficult to piece it all together. When I cool down though, it all makes sense!
How do you deal with writing criticism, apart from just ignoring it?
Criticism is part of life. If a literary work is not critiqued, then it is not spicy enough. When I read the critic, I analyze it and know whether it is profitable or negative to my work and apply changes as need be.
America's Next Author has been running for almost 8 weeks. If you could re-submit now, would you change anything about your story?
Perhaps my main character, Alex will not commit suicide. But that is the mystery of human nature. It can be very unpredictable at times.

The scene at church was a bit melodramatic since Alex exposed Father Crane's sins and did't need to kill himself. I thought Alex would triumph over some of his pain but he destroyed himself and his wife. Father Crane might not suffer any ill affects because people tend to overlook some things if they think a transgressor really repents.

wow what a writeup!!! amazing... keep it up..

what a story! Fr. Crane character tells us much about our so called priests. Hypocrisy at it's fullest. Alex surprised me, killing himself. Was that really necessary? That was a way bit over the edge which he did not potray. I hope other readers find it interesting.

i love this work. The church and it's controversy interests me. Question is, why didn't t anyone run for help or call out when Alex started his fury? Also, father crane must be quite an insensitive man to forget his child and allow years to pass. Anyways, this story gives us lessons that we need to learn and share with others. It can be a better piece with a bit of editing. Keep it up!

Nice plot and suspense. Awesome read! Way to go Ebube!!

Interesting overall plot and sharp twist I must say. Alex killing himself was a bit extreme and out of character for one who had turned his life around: he had a family and was a successful high ranking police officer. I must also add that I found the flow a bit bumpy. Keep it up bro.

a good read, though i would say quite predictable except for the end which didn't quite fit. All in all it was a good piece.

Really thought provoking....nice work

What a great suspense and twister. Never thought he would kill himself openly after many long years of father being missing. I thought he could have settled in private with his father. I wonder who Alex is really is or was (Character wise). I guess the jury is out on that one. Just caught me by surprise. Great job Ebeez.

Nice plot and suspense, but for what its worth, Alex got penance for himself. portrays what happens in the world today where people take their own lives to end their misery while those who caused their pain live on. They got it twisted.

The story Penance by Ebeez is a thriller. Though the character, Alex, a husband and a police chief didn’t quite link well with the Alex in the last scene. He had no pertinent reason to shoot himself or did he think he was in a movie? As regards the questions posed at the end of the story, I would say Crane was not in his rightful sense during the first 10 years of Alex’s life as he confessed. Besides, after 20 years, a father (sane) should be able to recognize his son of ten years, which meant his father at that time wasn’t familiar with his son. Rev. Crane acknowledged the fact that he was wrong at that time and started a new life though one cannot ascertain how effortful he tried to find his son Alex and/to seek his forgiveness. To say that Alex’s’ decision was an act of penance per se for his father/himself may not be effectual. If Alex lived, the congregation may have heeded his advice. But killing himself will stimulate more confusion. Alex had no good reason to have shot himself. He is a grown man, a police chief and has responsibilities on his personality. I wouldn’t judge him but come on that was the last thing (if any at all) one expected him to do. There are other ways he could make his dad Rev. Crane feel the sting of all the years of bottled-up retribution. Besides if Alex claimed to be a Christian, he would have forgiven his father long ago, though it will be a tough decision it’s possible by the grace of God.
