The procedure and interaction between the fictional Jacksonville Sheriff Office detectives is as accurate and realistic as possible.  It is the intent of the author to provide readers with a visceral look at the lives of police officers as well as the twisted, deadly actions of killers who prowl the streets around us.

Andrus has had experience in homicide and has been involved in the investigation of serial crimes.

Interview with James Andrus

Which is scarier: tracking down bad guys or trying to finish and publish a book?

Easily meeting a deadline for a book. Experience has taught me to be comfortable in police work but publishing is still new to me. There is a clear line between the art of writing and the business of publishing. Deadlines are terrifying and editors can be quite demanding. Overall I enjoyed both experiences.

When you were little did you want to be a writer or police officer when you grew up?

Incredibly, I alternated between both careers. I would watch Hill Street Blues and be convinced I wanted to be a cop. Then I would read a novel or watch a Stephen King interview and know for a fact I wanted to be a writer. Thank God I didn't dream of being a Wall Street banker. Things definitely wouldn't be as much fun as they are now.

How do you feel about taking no for an answer?

Any writer who takes no for an answer will never get published.

Which deceased author would you most like to take out to dinner?

HG Wells or Robert Louis Stevenson. Their imagination and talent for writing adventure as well as science fiction would ensure for an interesting evening. The Time Machine is one of my favorite novels and has compelled me to watch every time travel movie ever made no matter how stupid.

Did you ever read a book and then wish you had all that time back?

I have but it has been years since it happened. Now, I do not hesitate to stop reading and throw out the book if I realize it's not very good. There are too many good books out there to waste your time on something you're not interested in. Keeping in mind that taste is obviously subjective and one person's favorite novel could be insulting to someone else.

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

The ability to morph into anything I want. Holy cow, would I raise hell.

If you had a book club, what would it be reading and why?

I love accurate historical novels so I would be reading all of the Saxon Chronicles by Bernard Cornwall and some of the older Civil War novels by John Jakes. The little melodrama now and then can be fun.

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your writing career?

Getting that first book published is usually your biggest challenge. After learning the basics in reading about 300 novels, finding an agent who's interested in your work and can sell your novel is huge.

Do you find it difficult to sit down and write for weeks, months, or years on the same book?

I've always liked the challenge of specific tasks. I write every day. I generally start a new novel the day I turned in a novel. Getting paid for it is just a bonus.

If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?

Harry Potter would be a fun character. You stand for good and believe in your cause. You have magic literally at your fingertips. And you're a young man with your whole life in front of you. What could be more exciting?
