Kirkus MacGowan

Amazon bestselling author, Kirkus MacGowan, wrote his first book at age eight about traveling to Mars to find the cure for cancer. He put his writing dreams on hold for twenty-five years and focused his energies on playing baseball. He moved on when he found playing softball with his friends more enjoyable than his pipe dream. Since then, he graduated with a B.S. in Psychology, married a woman too good to be true, and moved back to his hometown. He gave up an amazing career waiting tables and now stays at home with his two crazy children. He spends his time writing thrillers and fantasy, playing softball with friends, enjoying the occasional computer game, and wrestling with his kids.

Story: One Night in Jail

Great story! I love how you kept it short and didn't drag out your descriptions. It kept me entertained from start to finish. I think you really portrayed that careless sarcasm that tends to find most of us after we've had a few too many. Great job! If you get a chance check out my story This Girl and a Bartender and let me know what you think.

What a relief to have a story marked "humourous" that is actually funny. The one-liners throughout the arrest and jail experience were things of beauty. All the best with the contest, Kate

This was humorous. I really enjoyed reading it and I thought it was well thought out, and well written. I was engaged all the way through. It had me laughing out loud. Great piece. Truly.

Hey Kirkus, as usual a great read. I found myself smirking and laughing throughout. Being a bit of a smart myself, I can relate to the situation. Never landed me in jail, but other punishment abounded. Thank you for putting some humor in my evening and congratulations on being a finalist. Good luck and best wishes! ~Robin

As someone who's smart mouth has gotten them into trouble more than once, I really appreciate your story. I think if the brother hadn't been there, this guy probably would have kept his mouth shut. But sometimes and audience makes us do crazy things. Not really a surprise to me at the end. I mean he got his smart mouth from somebody, right? Good luck.

Well written, realistic, but I wish it had a little bit more "oomph". I realize this is a short story, but I wish there was a little more tension, something to draw me in further. But again, well written, just lacking that something extra I look for.

When I read this story it made me cry, I was laughing that hard! The visual images created by the words used, the authors 'voice' in my head as the story were told were like he was sitting beside me, sharing a beer, and telling me this tale. I love it! Just the thought alone is enough to make tears leak! I'm waiting for a part two to this story!

Loved it! Really enjoyed the snark as one other reviewer put it. Great job Kirkus. Enjoyed every second of this story. Especially, loved the compromising positions that escalated throughout from going to jail due to your honesty, to the ridiculous flip flops, the bathroom explosions and finally the confrontation with your dad. Not sure what these others are talking about, the story moved along very well and it is plausible, esp since it's based on a true experience. So brush it off, you rawk and you know it! Would love to see you win this whole thing!

Well-written but lacking any sort of drive. It was almost entirely devoid of a plot. It was kind of like reading someone's boring journal entry. Good character development, though. By the end, we really get a sense for the main character's inability to take life seriously.

I have to be honest. This wasn't as good as your books, Kirkus. Having said that, I did enjoy reading it. Where others are disappointed in the ending, I think it was one of the best parts. As for the implausibility, real life is full of the unexpected. If you can't see this happening to you, you must lead a very sheltered life. I'm not and never have been a party girl, but I can see my bad luck leading me down a very similar path. (I address the critiques not because I'm trying to be a troll, but because I want to share the other sides of those coins. So let's not let this turn into an attack, ok? Just FYI.) Well done, Kirkus. Best of luck!

From a humorous piece, I expected more genuinely funny moments. This was an unmotivated piece based on an implausible situation that never really goes anywhere and has an unsatisfactory conclusion. My recommendation for increasing the humorous nature of this piece would be to cut extraneous details, focus on the funnier moments, and take them even further.

This story was a trip from start to finish. Entertaining and unpredictable are the two first words I'd use. Looking forward to reading more from this writer!

This was a really fun story with a lot of giggles pulled from me! I was a little disappointed in the ending but, I am not really sure if it could have been different or where else you could have gone with this story. Lot's of fun! Definitely worth the time to read!

I felt like I was in the jail cell. Kirkus did a great job describing the environment and the people involved in the story. I had feelings of uneasiness and tension while reading, yet I laughed out loud several times (causing some strange looks from my family members). Thanks for another good read, Kirkus.
