What is the best writing advice you've ever heard?
Sadly, people tend to outgrow the wonder of imagination. There are no limits on your mind, so the best advice I've ever heard is daydream, daydream, daydream. When you explore your mind, you just might find something amazing.
When you start a new story do you prepare an outline in advance or do you just jump right in?
Making an outline is critical to making your story flow right. That being said, I rarely do that. Sometimes it's best to see where the characters take you on their own.

An exquisitely written and compelling story. Others have commented that it read like a segment for a larger body of work. I disagree. The story presented the full parameters of a complete story arc. For the most part, the dialog was written in a manner that clearly indicated the era. It did slip a few times. But not so much that it removed the reader from the story. The only nitpick I would make to the author (and it is a nitpick) is that some of the story was told rather than shown. It didn't truly hurt this story, but, it might have increased the tension level for the reader.

Luke Swanson demonstrates his ability to touch the minds and hearts of his readers through his dedication, creativity, and style. Although I find some of the scenes of this story a bit gut-wrenching, I think Luke does a fantastic job of depicting the cruelty of the regime and the horror faced by all who were affected by them. The active language and imagery definitely leave an impression on the reader. This appears to be a passage of a larger idea; I believe it leaves the reader wishing that the main character would have survived and that his change of heart would affect the outcome of other lives. I sincerely hope that Luke will have more historical fiction to offer us in the near future! So proud of you, Luke!

Not a huge fan of stories within this genre and am a little shocked I made it through the entire story. This was extremely well-written and very descriptive. I think the ending could have been a little stronger, but I enjoyed it. Fantastic read!

Very talented young writer. Well-crafted and engaging story. My only criticism would be that it read like it was a piece of a larger story, rather than an actual short story. Some suggestions: I think the relationship/feelings between the soldier and his dog should have been expressed before he was asked to do what he had done. The same thing could be said about his relationship with is wife, other than just a few passing thoughts. It would have brought more emotion to the reader than as an afterthought, and it would have helped define the protagonist more completely as the story was focused on what took place, rather than how it impacted him as it did so. Ending could use a little work. One of the better stories in the contest.

I began reading this book expecting to slip over sections and comment at the end. But I read every word. Awesomely presented, commanding, fascinatingly descriptive, and totally absorbing, it captured my attention to the vey last word! Way to go Luke

I'm not a huge fan of historical war fiction, but this story is stellar! I loved the figurative language and imagery, which helped draw the reader into the story, imagine everything clearly, and feel for the main character. I also absolutely loved the ending! Very well done!

Such rich imagery adds to a great story. Krank is a real person, I feel, with real thoughts and emotions. I hope you go far with this.

Ohmygoodness, Luke Swanson, what a great author you are already. I read with rapt attention and great interest. The story line was stellar. It was seamless and tight. As I read, I imagined what was going to happen. You captured the horror of that era and all the Jews had to go through. Chilling and compelling. Ya done good, Luke!!

Hate that his work is going to cost $25+ in hardback someday, and I know I won't be able to wait for the paperback edition to come out like I did with all of the Grishams...

As always, Mr. Swanson has delivered an enticing read for us to enjoy. He has created a story line that is both captivating and original. I would always recommend his work to anyone with a fancy for historical fiction.

An excellent read! The only thing that could make this better is to make it longer, but that would ruin the 'short' part of the short story!
