Interview with Pippa Wilson

Do you have a favorite quote or passage from Letting Go of Ed that you'd like to share with us?

Faith is uplifting, strengthening, comforting, empowering, inspiring. Faith makes the darkest gloom brighten, the sharpest pain soften. Faith disperses your despair, your hopelessness, your negativity. Faith gently lifts your weary, bowed head and shows you the way forward, the way to a happier future. Faith makes the impossible possible.
Unfortunately, faith is also a bar of soap in a warm bath: a slippery bugger. No sooner have you got hold of some hope than it seems to slip right through your fingers, leaving you struggling to see a way out of your Ed-shaped prison.

First, be reassured that you aren’t alone in your fight to find and keep faith; you’re only human, after all. Sometimes you’ll be in Eeyore mode, gripping a glass that’s decidedly half-empty, and that’s okay. Accept that, even though in these moments you’ve lost hope, in time you’ll feel differently again.

And when faith is a fickle friend, hold fast to the fact that other people have healed from an eating disorder, and so can you. As impossible as the task may seem, as insurmountable as the obstacle looks, trust me when I say that letting go of Ed is within the realms of possibility.

After reading Letting Go of Ed, what do you most want people to take away with them?

That you can completely let go of an eating disorder and have a happy, balanced relationship with food and with your body.

If you could give only one tip to someone who is currently suffering from an eating disorder, what would that be?

Have faith in yourself and in your ability to let go and be free.

Name a book that you'd be embarrassed to be seen reading.

I don’t get embarrassed by books I read. If I want to read a book, I read it – and I don’t really care what people think. I remember once being on the London Underground reading a wonderful old children’s picture book called Ant and Bee by Angela Banner and getting some funny looks. I just smiled at the people gawking. I was having a lovely time reading a book from my childhood that took me back to a time of sherbert and teddy bears’ picnics and grazed knees.

What was the book that most influenced your life and why?

When I Loved Myself Enough by Kim McMillen. Something clicked in me when I read it; it was like I understood at last what inner peace meant.

If you met an alien from another planet and were asked to recommend one or two books to him/her/it that would summarize humanity, which books would you choose?

Oliver Twist. Winne the Pooh. Harry Potter. The Color Purple.

If you had a book club, what would it be reading and why?

Oriah Mountain Dreamer’s The Invitation, because it has the power to change your whole way of looking at life. Or Autobiography of a One-Year-Old by Rohan Candappa, because it’s impossible not to laugh and laugh while reading it.

How do you primarily interact with your readers?

Twitter and my blog at

What type of books do you like to read in your spare time?

All sorts. Children’s picture books with my son – we’re currently working our way through Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Mind, body and spirit titles. All kinds of fiction – the pure escapism kind.

If you could choose one superhero power, what would it be and why?

The power to heal. My son was desperately ill when he was a baby and I so wished I could make it all better. Imagine if you could heal you own and others’ pain – what a different world it would be.
