Interview with Stephanie Pappas

If you could give only one tip to someone new to yoga, what would that be?

That it is NOT about flexibility. Yoga dates back over 5000 years to India and the goal of the practices were always to become more aware and enlightened mentally. The physical practices are there to support the health and well being of the vehicle, which happens to be our body.

Did you ever read a book and then wish you had all that time back?

No. I never regret time consciously spent and I choose my books wisely! I am fussy about what I read.

Which yoga pose is hardest for you?

None are hard. I do what I can and after 20 years of practice most of them come easily, and if they don't I am not fooled into thinking that doing any pose will make be a better, more aware person. It is SO not about that or achieving anything.

If you had a book club, what would it be reading and why?

Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach. We all need more self love and acceptance and our culture is notorious for encouraging us to be hard on ourselves.

How did you get into bellydance? Do you ever participate in performances?

I have been teaching belly dance and other world dance blends for over 15 years. I do not perform, only share with women who are interested in moving in fun and different ways.

Name a book that you'd be embarrassed to be seen reading.

I don't get embarrassed by this sort of thing.

Are you currently teaching yoga or bellydance classes? If so, how can people sign up?

Yes I am teaching an 8 week Yoga World Dance series in Flemington, NJ and people can email me at [email protected] or there is a paypal link on my web site

I am also interviewing people for my next yoga teacher training in Flemington, NJ this fall info at

What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your career?

Riding out the fluctuations of income being self employed for 20 years!

Are you working on any new books?

Yes, Reflections of a Codependent Yogi is in works and some other projects.

If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?

A national geographic reporter/photographer having cool adventures.
