My name is Cheryline Lawson, mother of two boys Jamal and Jevon Lawson, ages 17 and 12 respectively as well as the wife of Fredrick Lawson.

Today my life appears to be normal, but it wasn’t so 21 years ago. I gave birth to my only child at the time, in 1986, whose name was Chadrick Lawson. As an only child, he was the apple of my eye. I began to plan for his future before he was born. Little did I know that I would outlive him.

There was no rhyme or reason why he was suddenly taken away from me. Although it was an accident, it could have been avoided. When you read the story, you may agree with me on that point, but you will also agree that some things happen for reasons that we cannot explain.

I realize now that it goes without saying that we should accept the things we cannot change. At that time, I would never want to hear this reasonable fact from anyone. I was a grieving mother and I wanted to stay that way for a long time. I went through so many emotions of guilt, anger, self-pity, selfishness, and hurt. The pain was so immense that I did not know if I could stay alive feeling that way.

I decided that I needed to share my story with other parents and family members who might be going through what I went through years ago or might have gone through it and would identify with what I am about to share.

My aim is to encourage you that it will get better. If your wound is fresh, it hurts a lot right now, but as time goes by and with the support that you get, you will find some peace to live on.

I don’t presume to be an expert in grief counseling, but I know you will listen to someone who has experienced what you have experienced and whom you know will have empathy for you. I can only tell you what worked for me and how I coped with this great loss of my only child.

This book was written with you in mind. I wrote it for you as a support center to pull some kind of encouragement and strength from to help you through the process of your grief.

I am sure Chadrick would have wanted me to share his story and help a family like yours to find some kind of comfort in the time of your need.

My son died suddenly. Yours may be an illness, but it really does not matter. It hurts just the same. You need someone to identify with about your feelings.

My story will help you to do just that and my hope is that it will restore your faith in your future and the future of your family.

Let your feelings go as you read this book. It will touch the very core of your heart. It will bring back some memories, but you have to go through the grieving process to heal your pain and it is quite OK to cry if you feel like it.

I hope that you will come to a point in your coping to remember that there are others going through the same thing that you are and it will give you some kind of consolation that you are not alone.
