GRIMM TALES is a collection of stories by some of the top names in online crime fiction, all based on classic fairy tales. As novelist Ken Bruen writes in his introduction, "Ever imagined what would have come down the dark pike if The Brothers Grimm were more Brothers Coen and wrote mystery?" The collection is edited by John Kenyon, editor of Grift magazine, and contains 17 stories by Patricia Abbott, Absolutely*Kate, Jack Bates, Eric Beetner, Nigel Bird, Loren Eaton, Kaye George, Blu Gilliand, Seana Graham, Eirik Gumeny, R.L. Kelstrom, John Kenyon, BV Lawson, Evan Lewis, B. Nagel, Sean Patrick Reardon and Sandra Seamans.

A nice twist

This reminded me a bit of some of the exercises we were given to do in English when I was at school - although I never managed to turn out anything anywhere near this good. Modernising fairy tales, some more well-known than others - is probably more complicated than you'd think. I don't honestly know what I was expecting apart from something modern and sassy. Well, in some cases I got that, but in others it was a bit lacking. I like the short story arena because it suits my style of reading. I only get little pockets of time here and there and not usually frequent enough to be able to get into a novel and keep it all in my head with the long breaks between sittings. But here I think the short stories were a bit too short. With mystery and crime I think a writer needs more space to build up the tension and reveal the goings on. There is a lot of character building and atmospere that needs to be created so I think it only makes sense that where one aspect is done well, another is a little bit weak. But that is just my humble opinion. I did enjoy the stories in general and I would say it is worth a read.
