Two of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s most radical works examining economic inequality, police brutality, and black power, which speak to our most pressing social issues of today.

By 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had become “the most dangerous man in America,” designated as a threat by the FBI and jailed almost thirty times for participating in acts of civil disobedience. Despite facing resistance among his own leadership, King urgently pressed on for a multiracial movement of the poor. Facing violence and black separatism, and nearing exhaustion, he traveled across the country on behalf of his Poor People’s Campaign, seeking to bring together “two Americas,” as he put it, one that was “flowing with the honey of equality” and another that had “a daily ugliness about it.”

Though we’re familiar with the celebrated King who shared his dream of racial equality on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and who reassured those engaged in the struggle that “‘if you stand up for justice you can never fail,” it is rare that we remember his declarations that “a riot is the language of the unheard,” or that “Black power is a cry of disappointment.” Captured here, in this brief ebook volume, are excerpts of two of King’s most radical works—“The Other America” and “Black Power”—which powerfully speak across time to our most pressing social issues today.

“When we go to Washington, we’re going to have black people because black people are poor, but we’re going to also have Puerto Ricans because Puerto Ricans are poor in the United States of America. We’re going to have Mexican Americans because they are mistreated. We’re going to have Indian Americans because they are mistreated. And for those who will not allow their prejudice to cause them to blindly support their oppressor, we’re going to have Appalachian whites with us in Washington.”—From “The Other America”
