"Long live the King" hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King's On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer's craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999-and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery. Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, On Writing will empower and entertain everyone who reads it-fans, writers, and anyone who loves a great story well told.

Interesting Read

The book gives an interesting insight in Stephen King, both his life and the way he writes and started his career. I didn't really like him before reading this book, but now appreciate the man much more. Worth the money!

Half Autobiography, Half Non-Magical Writing Advice

The first half of this book is a brief autobiography that tells about how Stephen King got into writing. The second half is the part with information about his writing process and some writing advice. The first part isn't useful if you only want to learn about King's writing methods, but it is interesting enough in itself. (King in his earlier life seems a lot like Eddie Dean from the Dark Tower novels.) As for the second half, you won't find any magical formulas to follow. In fact, King's writing process seems very non-formulaic. Perhaps the best piece of advice he gives is to get a copy of The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. That book should be required reading in every high school English class. King also explains a little about the publishing world and some useful tidbits about first vs second drafts. All in all, it was interesting to get his thoughts about writing, but there isn't anything spectacular here. And I think that was sort of part of the point: every writer has their own method and style, and this is just one account from one writer.
