The Main Line Murders - New Edition July 2011
A Detective Inspector Flynn novel

When two bodies are found on the railway line near Cramwell Station. The local press name the case, ‘The Main Line Murders.’ It is the first recorded case of a serial killer in Old Cramwell, a northern seaside town in flux, between its industrial past and regenerated future. The first victim is an elegantly dressed woman whose head is so badly crushed it is impossible to identify her even with dental records.

After a second body is discovered and the investigation becomes more and more complex, D.I. Flynn believes the key to solving the case could lie in the dark, secret past of Brampton Psychiatric Hospital. With a variety of possible suspects and a deadly, psychotic killer on the loose, will D.I. Flynn and his team discover the truth in time to save the next victim?

A good first novel

There is plenty to keep apace with in this first novel by Sonia Kilvington. She gathers up a nicely drawn bunch of characters and lets the reader get to know them, warts and all, so that we have a firm grasp of their wants, desires, motivations and their demons - and they are not a boring group. She places them in a vivid landscape, one that is well-conjured and feels real. Then she unleashes the plot. She cannily weaves in little gems of information that never jump out at you as 'clues for later' so you need to concentrate to second guess what will happen next. It kept me on my toes - I couldn't ask for anything more.
